Entando leverages PatternFly for UX Convergence
From E4.2 to E4.3
The Entando UX Designers team, during the last year, collected the opinions, the needs and the behaviours of Entando 4.2 (E4.2) users. The aim it was understand the strengths and weakness about usability of E4.2. To better understand and listen to the real users’ voiced, the UX team organized field studies and in depth interviews. Throughout this research, the team designed personas profiles and identified the main critical issues. The result of the study was a list of main topics clustered in these areas:
- Graphic User Interface
- Features and functionalities
- Information Architecture
Thanks to interviews and data collected, it was possible to organize and prioritize the design activities to improve the user interface and usability of E4.2 and to transition the platform to a better E4.3 (Entando 4.3).
Then, the UX team and the Developers team worked together to improve the main critical topic.
What’s new today in the E4.3?
The result of cooperative work is:
- a new information architecture
- a new dashboard
- a new Page Designer with drag & drop features
- Page Preview mode
- new page publishing features
- improvements in the UX of CMS features
Why E4.3 is designed following the guideline of PatternFly?
E4.3 is the new software of Entando designed following the PatternFly guidelines.
Entando believes that user experience is key to the success of digital transformation and modern applications. For this reason, Entando wanted to improve the user experience and the user interface of the platform following the most modern design guidelines, such as PatternFly.
Entando choose PatternFly 3.25.0!
We think that Patternfly it is the most suitable standard to design “business products”.
How PatternFly helped us to design the new UI of E4.2?
PatternFly has adapted to our needs. It is a good union between Bootstrap and user interface suggestions.
The PatternFly design system includes components and widgets ready-to-go. It recommends sets of icons to complete the user interface. These suggestions helped us to chose coherent and adaptive icons to design a new UI.
Moreover every single component on PatternFly is designed in responsive. This is a good solution to improve consistency and to increase usability of the product.
PatternFly helped us to modify and organize terminology and labeling. For example, the E4.2 users have pointed out that there were inconsistencies in terms. The PatternFly guidelines have allowed us to remove synonyms from the words like "create", “new” and "add".
By the way, on July 14, 2017 the team of UX Designers of PatternFly, published this post Evolving the PatternFly Visual Language about the latest trends in visual language: dark or light?
We are looking forward to the new PatternFly evolution!
